There is a lot of debate surrounding the divinity of Jesus. Some people say he was an activist during his time, some say he was just a powerful prophet, and some don’t believe in him and his existence at all. What do you think?
Even Jesus himself once asked his disciples the same question, “whom do you say I am?” to find out if Jesus was indeed Devine or God we need to run some tests on him by using the main attributes that a Devine being must possess.
Rev 19:6
6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
KJV
1. Omnipotent
The first attribute of God we are going to discuss is omnipotent. It means being [all powerful, almighty, unstoppable, supreme, invincible, etc. Was Jesus Christ all that? Well let’s find out
John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.
KJV
Let’s pause here for a second. It can only take an all-powerful being to be able to create the world and everything in it. Definitely yes but the question is who is this word that John is referring to as being with God in the beginning. Is he Jesus Christ or another heavenly being that we know not of? Let’s dig in further.
John 1:10-11
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
KJV
That’s it, friends, there could be no other person being referred to here but Jesus. He is the only one whom the world refers to as the only begotten of the Father. So on this Jesus does pass the first test. He also had this to say about himself
Matt 28:18
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
KJV
Wow! What a huge amount of power did Jesus have, immeasurable power indeed.

Moving on to the second test. I wonder what that could be. Well, only the bible can tell and with that, we are going to run the second test to see if Jesus was Devine.
Jer 23:23-24
Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? 24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.
KJV
2. Omnipresent
The second attribute we are going to discuss as shown in the verse above is omnipresence. It means being [everywhere at the same time, pervasive, ubiquitous, ever-present, universal, etc. Was Jesus Christ all that? Well, let’s see.
John 1:45-50
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before thHow was Jesus able to see Nathanael under the fig tree when they were out of sight? This is the reason that propelled Nathanael to believe at once. Here is another instance.at Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
How was Jesus able to see Nathanael under the fig tree when they were out of sight? This is the reason that propelled Nathanael to believe at once. Here is another instance.
Mark 11:1-6
and when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, 2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
KJV
Jesus even knew the exact location of the colt, where it was going to be tied, which no man has ever sat on, and most interestingly the exact words that the owners would say to the disciples. How could he have imagined all that if he were not everywhere? What do you think? Interesting how Jesus could time travel so quickly and predict events before they happen.
Matt 17:24
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
27 Jesus saith unto him, Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
KJV
Let me stop right here. I don’t need to go any further on this one. There seems to be no place on earth that Jesus could not reach. Even deep into the ocean, he was familiar and thus he passes the second test resoundingly.
Going to test number three, let’s see if Jesus can make it again?
1 Tim 1:17
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
KJV
3. Omniscient
The third attribute that we are going to discuss is omniscient. It means [total knowledge, well-informed, sagacious, all-seeing, wise, etc. With this information let’s run a test on Jesus Christ and find out how much knowledge he had.
1 Cor 1:20-25
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
KJV
The expression Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God caught my attention. Paul explains that in our human wisdom, scientific or religious we could not believe in him who was the wisdom and power of God. You see the whole idea of Jesus coming to this planet to save us is an expression of God,s thoughts and plan for us which is his wisdom. So if God in his wisdom planned the redemption for us through Christ then Jesus is his wisdom and power. Let’s read further
John 16:27-31
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
KJV
When Jesus came to the world what did he bring for us you may ask? The simple thing he brought wisdom from God to share with us so that we may believe in God’s existence and his ability to save us from any wrong.
Luke 22:31-34
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
KJV
And it happened exactly as Jesus had predicted it would. Peter had promised that he would not let anyone touch Jesus but as Jesus had stated he had denied him three times before the cock crowed that day. How smart of Jesus to be able to foretell the future. This was but just a piece of what he could. Read the following verse as tells the disciples about future world events and you will agree with me that some of these events have indeed happened before.
Matt 24:3
And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying; tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
KJV
So Jesus passes yet again the third test. Let’s continue to the fourth and find out what it’s about.
Heb 6:13-17
For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, 16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. 17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
KJV
4. Immutable
The fourth attribute we are going to discuss is immutable. It means [irreversible, unchallenged, indisputable, absolute, undeniable etc.] Did Jesus have such powers? There is only one way to find out.
John 8:53
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
KJV
From the attributes that we discussed earlier, we already learned that Jesus was instrumental in the creation of the world. This, therefore, confirms the very same words he was speaking to the Jews that he existed even before Abraham did.
Heb 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.
KJV
John 17:24
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
KJV
It’s so hard for some people to believe in the divinity of Christ and that he existed with the Father before the world got created. Jesus was very much aware of that and that is the reason why he did ask them “whom do you think I am” because he knew that seeing him in flesh and blood it would be hard to believe. But it is possible to the one who believes. Is Jesus immutable? Yes! And so he passes the test yet again. From here we move on to the fifth attribute. Let’s hear what it is?
1 Tim 1:17
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
KJV
5. Eternal
The fifth attribute we are going to discuss is eternal. It means [everlasting, immortal, undying, endless, timeless, etc. Was Jesus Immortal? Let’s dive in.
John 11:25-27
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
KJV
Jesus also said he is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. This signifies that he is from everlasting to everlasting.
Mark 14:57-58
And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
KJV
Yes, Jesus did say those words but he wasn’t referring to the earthly sanctuary as the accusers thought he was referring to his death and resurrection which happened 3 days after his burial.
Heb 1:8
But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
KJV
Human beings are said to be mortal because we can’t live past death. But as for Christ he already knew that he was going to die and live again and because he could see past death and beyond how could it not be said that he is eternal? We continue on to the next attribute.
Ex 34:6-7
And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…
KJV
6. Merciful
The sixth attribute we are going to discuss is merciful. It means [kind-hearted, forgiving, generous, sympathetic, compassionate etc.]. Was Jesus merciful? Yes! A lot.
Matt 9:11-13
And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
KJV
Our merciful Saviour was not discriminating against others. Jesus was friends with all. He came to free us all without prejudice.
Rom 5:8-11
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
NIV
We will never be able to repay Christ for the pain he went through for us. His love and mercy endureth forever. With this, he passes test number six leading us to the next and seventh attribute.
Ezra 9:15
O Lord God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
KJV
7. Righteous
The seventh attribute we are going to discuss is righteousness. It means [without sin, blameless, pure, honest, uprightness, etc. Was Jesus righteous? I believe this attribute is the one that Jesus is famous for. Jesus lived a sinless life here on earth one thing humans have failed over and over again.
John 8:45-46
And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
KJV
During his closing moments, Jesus asked if anyone knows of any sin he committed and there was not even an answer. Some people had grown up with him but none could point out one wrong deed.
1 John 2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
KJV
Christ can stand before God and intercede on our behalf because he experienced the world and overcame. You and I we have this second chance through Christ our Lord. So since Christ was found to be sinless, we can safely conclude that he was righteous and we move on to our last attribute.
Matt 4:8-10
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'”
NIV
8. Worshipped
If you are Devine then you are to be worshipped. The final attribute we are going to discuss is worship. It means [adoration, reverence, respect, veneration, revered, etc. Should you worship Jesus? What do you think? Does Jesus deserve to be worshipped? Let’s head over to the bible.
Rev 14:6-7
Then I saw another angel flying in mid-air, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth — to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
NIV
In the previous paragraphs we mentioned Christ being instrumental in the creation of the world and now we are told we should worship him who created heaven and earth. In summary, we are told to worship Jesus as the creator and as our redeemer as well.
Rev 5:11-13
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angelsupon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
12 In a loud voice they sang:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
NIV
Where is Jesus now? He is the Lamb sited at the right hand of God with power, wealth and wisdom, and strength, and honour and glory and praise. He is being worshiped by thousands upon thousands of holy beings in heaven, so why not me and you? I believe Jesus is God. How about you?
