What is this mystery called sin and how did it originate? This is one of the questions that I have seen most bible students struggle to answer. I have struggled likewise until God showed me some of the texts from his holy word that I want to share with you today.
Have you also been in a similar position? Are you also struggling to explain the origins of sin? Well, stick with me as we unravel this mystery.
Rom 3:20
… for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
The law brings to light, explains, and describes what sin is. The law has a mirror effect. You cannot see how messy your face looks unless you see yourself in the mirror. You would not always believe it coming from someone else until you stand before one. It is the mirror that brings to your attention the dirt that may have accumulated on your face the same way the law brings to you the knowledge of sin. Let us look at the next text and see if we might draw something else.
Rom 5:13
For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
This text kind of sums it all up for me. We cannot call an act or deed a sin if there is no law. Where there is no law there is no sin. No person can accuse another of sinning when there is no law, of breaking the rules when there are no rules at all. When there is no law every action or deed is considered right. It’s only upon establishing a law that some action or deed can be considered wrongful or sin in this case. Let us look at one last example.
John 3:8
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.
The only way to tell where it is coming or going is to place an object or grow a tree. As the wind blows through you see and hear the leaves rustle and that’s when you can record the wind acting on it. So is sin. We could not tell what it is or where it came from until there was a law established. This brings us to the next question, what laws were founded in the beginning and what is to sin?
Gen 2:15-17
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
From the book of Genesis, we learn that God did make laws to govern his heavenly host for example such as the law he gave to our parents in the Garden of Eden. This law made it known to Adam and Eve what sin is.
What is to sin?
1 John 3:4-5
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
Now that we have established what sin is it’s time we go back to heaven and find out what exactly happened at the beginning of beginnings.
Rom 7:7-13
What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “Do not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
If sin is breaking the law then which Commandment did Lucifer break? The recorded event is from the text below
John 8:44-45
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Jesus had no right calling the devil a liar and murderer from the beginning if no law was established then. It is through him calling the devil a liar and murderer that we learn of the existence and transgression of the law(s) by Lucifer that has earned him the title “Father of lies.” From the above texts, it can be established that he was famous for not standing by the truth and went about breaking every established law. Jesus called him the father of lies and that when he lies he speaks his native language suggesting how inclined towards sin he was or became.
What are your feelings towards the devil? I used to think that something strange befell him leading to his stray actions until I came across this.
Rev 12:12
Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
The above showed me that his decisions were not a result of an accident. They were made up of choices and decisions.
“The difference between man and the devil is that the devil chose but men was deceived” {Desire Of Ages by E.G White p761:3}

Even his fallen angel friends do admit to the same thing
Matt 8:28-29
And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
What time are these demons referring to? You see everything was plain to the devil and his angels as to the decision or course of action that they had chosen and God made it plain that it would have them end in a fire of torment. This they have accepted and they are ready to go down that path with anyone who chooses to break the law just like they did.
My prayer for you is that you be counted among the group of saints that keep God’s commandments and not be counted with the demons who have chosen death over life.
Rev 6:15-17
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Even human being who has been rejecting the light sent to them will on that day remember the words they once despised while they were enjoying the pleasures of the world and declare that the great day they once disbelieved is indeed been but it will be too late.
The choice is yours to make. It’s never too late to mend relations with God. He is always a prayer away.
God bless you as you make that decision to keep his commandments at all times.
