What comes to your mind when you hear the words “it is written”? In this lesson, we shall discuss the import of these words as they appear in the Bible.
Christ is the one man who used these words frequently. When he used the words ‘it is written’ there was a tradition and an education system in those days. It was his reason for every act that varied from the family tradition and the religious education that existed in those days. Why use those words and what meaning therefore can we draw out from them?
1. That which was regarded as superior education was the greatest hindrance to real development.
Mark 7:5-8
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with ‘unclean’ hands?” 6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.”
2. True education would lead the youth to “seek the Lord if haply they might feel after Him, and find Him.”
Acts 17:24-28
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he is not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
3. Jesus had everything he wanted from the scriptures
Ps 119:105-106
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.
God is the source of all wisdom and knowledge therefore every other form is lesser. The one who is acquainted with the scriptures has worthy material and that is recognized in the higher school of the courts above.
John 7:15
15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
What do you see today which is the opposite of what the statements above mean? Today people heed the world more than they do scripture. There are learned people within the church who feel like the church can learn or benefit from one or two things from them. Those people are making a great mistake.
Imagine you were a doctor during Christ’s ministry and you witnessed him touching and healing lepers with his bare hands and not getting infected. What would you make of your lessons on safety and precaution? Or of gravity if you were a physicist and Jesus walked on water? Or fluid scientist and sommeliers when he turned water into wine?
The scriptures are the most powerful gift of unmatched knowledge given to man. The Bible is the voice of God to man. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe and practice it to be holy.
Ps 119:9-16
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. 10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. 12 Praise be to you, O Lord; teach me your decrees. 13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. 15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. 16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

Today most people would argue against the Bible in contrast to the character of Jesus who sided with the word of God always and defended its contents with his dear life. The world is teaching us that the Bible is an old storybook and therefore we cannot take it seriously.
My dear brother and sister do not be deceived as the message in the Bible shall never pass away. Slowly believers and nonbelievers are losing confidence in the Bible because the tempter is using various media and influential people to undermine its value.
Avoid such content and give yourself time every day to read a few chapters and meditate on it. The Holy Spirit is ever present and ready and helps understand those who cherish such precious moments.
God bless you and see you in the next lesson.
