One Thing Common To All Men

Is going to church a sign of weakness? Are churchgoers or Christians the only ones who need God? What do you think?

The rate at which people drop out of church nowadays is alarming and it is estimated to continue so in the future. Are they running away from God to something new and better? Is there something better than God out there? People may lose confidence in the church because of several reasons but here is one thing that we all have in common despite our differences- we all need God.

Acts 3:1-6
3 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. 4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Our churches would be flooded with people today if there were handed gifts of cash and so on. Unfortunately that is not the case. Money is the most sought after resource in the world but should it be the number one priority in life?

One common remark you get from unbelievers is “if you are not about money then don’t waste my time”. God and his church are being ignored because they would not be providing for their daily needs, so they say. Is the church going to pay my bills and take care of my needs, they ask? If not, then why waste my energy instead?

Many a time this excuse is brought up and it casts doubt on God and his ability to provide for us. What is God all about? What is the main reason why he and the church exist in the first place?

Matt 4:1-4
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

God is all about the truth and nothing but the truth. Is this truth able to pay the bills? Can we live only from the truth? This is a question that will run in the minds of many who are contemplating going to church or not. ‘So after I go to church and learn to practice the truth, then what! Then the gold will fall from the sky, they ask.

Here is the thing. What most people do not understand is the result of knowing and practicing the truth. It is the truth that will have you live a satisfactory life because with it comes intelligent and smart decisions guaranteeing you peace, joy, and prosperity. If a man thinks God does not understand him and their needs let them read the following text.

Matt 7:12
12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

This is not a message for the believer only. It is for the unbeliever as well. No man wants to be treated differently than they give and I repeat no man in the world.  People want to love and be loved back, greet and be greeted back, give and receive too, and so on.

The only time this does not apply is when committing a crime. No man wants to kill and is likewise killed, steal and be stolen from, and so on. The good is written in all our hearts. We all long for a better world but it is not the better that we are giving out. Here is one point where believers and unbelievers meet and share a common thing and Christ is at the center of it. For this reason, we all need God.

It’s a matter of realization that he who made us knows us all by design and by name and even by the number of our hairs. We cannot run away from it.

A man lifts his hands in worship.

Matt 6:33-34
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Man wants peace, safety, love, prosperity, protection, and all these he has sought for but in vane, because he does so in his way ignoring and neglecting the way of God his creator.

If he seeks his kingdom and his righteousness he will be a wise man and he will be safe and free from the evil ways that have brought him nothing but unrest. So now you may ask, is going to church for the weak?

My answer is no. Only strong minds will go to church. Cowards will walk away because it’s the ease, vice, lawlessness, and immorality that they are after and are gaining from. They are too scared to face the truth even if it’s what they desire. Their days are numbered. All men need God.

Ps 37:25-29
25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed. 27 Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. 28 For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off; 29 the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.

Here are the two sides battling it out. Which one do you choose? Is it the one whose author is the self-existing and Eternal one or the one whose author is a mere mortal man? The decision is yours.

God bless you and see you in our next lesson
